Communication chaos in Lydenburg

Phone networks are down, Wi-Fi is unavailable, and the internet is slowed. This is the third day that Lydenburg has been affected by this crisis.

Lydenburg and its surrounding areas have been plunged into a state of communication crisis since Monday July 8.

The town experienced widespread disruptions affecting phone networks, Wi-Fi and internet speeds.

Residents and businesses alike have been grappling with unreliable connectivity, significantly impacting daily activities and emergency response efforts.

By Wednesday afternoon, the outages were still sporadic, with the service providers doing their best to keep users informed and updated.

Wi-Fi providers such Letaba Wireless sent out messages to users, stating: “The upstream provider link is down, we are running on backup. Intermittent connection and slow speeds are to be expected. There is no estimated time for repairs yet.”

Herotel Fibre informed its users that there is a major outage in multiple areas caused by a national carrier. “We endeavour to have your services restored promptly; updates will follow.”

Since the onset of the disruption on Monday, residents have reported sporadic mobile phone coverage, making it difficult to place calls or send text messages reliably.

Wi-Fi networks, essential for both personal and professional use, have been intermittently unavailable, leaving many unable to access emails, conduct online transactions or engage in remote work. Internet speeds have slowed to a crawl in some areas, exacerbating frustrations and hindering productivity.

Businesses relying on internet-based services have experienced operational setbacks, while residents have faced challenges in accessing essential information and staying connected with loved ones.
