Mbombela’s Stinkhout Crescent businesses left in the dark

According to the CoM's spokesperson Joseph Ngala, old infrastructure is the cause of the non-functioning streetlights in Stinkhout Crescent.

Despite promises from the City of Mbombela (CoM) to repair the streetlights in Stinkhout Crescent, these are still not working.

At the beginning of April, the CoM’s spokesperson, Joseph Ngala, said they had not been aware of the problem until Lowvelder brought it to their attention. This was despite the businesses in the area claiming that the matter had been reported several times before.

Ngala promised that the CoM would investigate the matter and repair the lights. According to him, the streetlights had old fittings that needed to be replaced, and they were planning to do so in two weeks’ time.

However, almost three months have passed and no action has yet been taken. Instead, Ngala said: “Stinkhout Crescent has old infrastructure, and during our investigations, we found that there are two cable faults that need to be repaired before replacing any of the fittings that are not working. Our team is busy with other areas and they will hopefully be able to return to conduct fault-finding and repair the lights during week of July 31.”

Previously, the ward councillor, Kenneth Mkhonto, said the matter had been reported to the CoM’s energy department, and they are awaiting feedback.

Meanwhile, many business owners in Stinkhout Crescent said they will embark on a campaign in the near future to revive the area by making sure it’s clean and the streetlights are in working order, thus strengthening security.
