Police discover suspected drugs worth R4.2m in Komatipoort

What is thought to be crystal meth was found in the minibus taxi that was coming from Mozambique to South Africa.

A 36-year-old Mozambican national was arrested for possession of suspected crystal meth with an estimated street value of more than R4.2m.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the border police were conducting routine duties when a white Toyota minibus taxi came from Mozambique, heading into South Africa.

“As a norm, members conducted a routine search and it was during this period that they discovered a false compartment in the vehicle. Upon further investigation, the suspected drugs were found hidden inside the false compartment. The consignment weighed approximately 17kg,” said Mdhluli.

He also said the substance was confiscated by the police for further investigation, while the man was charged with illegal possession of suspected drugs.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday July 1.

At the time of going online the outcome of the court appearance was unknown.
