Lowvelders extend a helping hand to family of bus accident victim

Mbombela residents came to the aid of the Fouché family by contributing to his funeral and donating groceries. Johan was cremated on Wednesday July 26 following the tragic incident.

Lowvelders have once again displayed the spirit of ubuntu by assisting the bereaved family of the late Johan Fouché, who was hit and killed by a Buscor bus on Tuesday June 18.

According to Johan’s wife, Paulie, many locals came to their aid, contributed to his funeral and also donated groceries to the family. Buscor also contributed to assist them. “We really appreciate what the people of Mbombela have done for me and my family during this difficult time. They have shown us the spirit of humanity when we needed it the most. Since I am unemployed, I didn’t know how I was going to carry this burden. I would like to thank all those who assisted and those who are still going to help,” Paulie said.

Johan’s body was cremated on Wednesday June 26 and his memorial service will take place this Friday June 28 at Die Beweeg Kerk in Mbombela.

Johan was hit by a Buscor bus near the R40 and Old Pretoria Road intersection on Tuesday June 18, while riding his bicycle to work. He was declared dead on the scene.

Paulie described her husband as a man who always sacrificed his own needs to ensure that his children had everything they needed.

She also said it is difficult to accept that he is gone, but they are getting stronger day by day. “It still hurts to have to remind my smaller children that their dad is not coming back, though the older one understands better. Above all, my husband was using a bicycle every day to commute to work, about 12km away, so he could provide for his family. He was gentle with us and made sure we were happy. I lost a husband to whom I was married for 15 years, and now my four kids don’t have a father. It still feels like a bad dream that I wish someone could wake me up from and tell me he is still alive,” she said.
