SPONSORED | Busamed celebrates landmark knee replacement surgery

Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital has reached a very special milestone in robotic knee replacement surgeries, following the successful completion of 200 surgeries performed by orthopaedic surgeons Dr Alex Kuhn and Dr Dimitri Dimitriou.

The Rosa Robotic System, or just Rosa for short, was first introduced to Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital in March 2023, making it the first-ever institution in Mpumalanga to offer robotic knee replacement surgery. It offers the public an innovative approach to more precise knee surgery, leading to better post-operative patient outcomes and often an easier recovery process.

The acquisition of Rosa last year aligned with the Busamed Group’s commitment to technological innovation, and they are further excited to announce that Rosa will henceforth also be able to offer robotic hip replacement surgery.
This follows the recent Rosa Hip software upgrade for anterior hip replacements and makes use of a guided tele-health orthopaedic and patient experience.
Rosa Hip provides a more personalised total hip replacement experience during the entire care journey and positively impacts both care teams and patients. By improving the patient pathway with Rapid Recovery, the aim is to improve patient outcomes and help provide better care, while also lowering the cost thereof.

As with the robotic knee surgeries, Rosa does not work without the surgeon prompting it to do so, and the doctors at Busamed have been specially trained on how to use this ‘assistant’. The surgical procedure is still performed by the surgeon, with the assistance of Rosa.
The implementation of Rosa at Busamed in March 2023 and the subsequent upgrade represent a significant advancement in the field of orthopaedic surgery in the Lowveld, as it provides surgeons with greater precision in replacement surgery and offers state-of-the-art orthopaedic care to patients.

The 200th Rosa patient, Alewyn Janson. His procedure took place this morning with Dr Alex Kuhn. With him here are Melanie Viljoen, Marda Christensen, Nolwazi Nkuna, Neshua Makamu and Hariette Thabethe.

According to Dr Kuhn, due to the decreased amount of soft tissue dissection, he expects to see better results which have, in the first year, been confirmed by the Francois Theron Physiotherapist team. In conjunction with the newly launched mymobility Patient app in January, they are able to give patients a personalised experience with accurate monitoring during surgery and the post-operation rehabilitation phase.

Further to the exciting technological advancements in orthopaedic surgery, Busamed is additionally honoured to once again have received the prestigious accolade of Best Healthcare Facility in this year’s Best of Mbombela Awards. Achieving an award such as this was made possible through the commitment and dedication of their experienced staff and the support of exceptional specialist doctors.

Busamed’s staff and medical professionals strive to provide excellent service to patients and their families. They embrace the idea that family support and comfort are vital to the return of wellness for patients, and as such, they take a patient-centred approach to the care that is provided.
A wide range of services and facilities are available to both patients and their families to exceed their expectations of care, not only while they are in the hospital for surgery, but also before and after each admission.
