Special ASD training event at Pro Gratia in Mbombela

The information session was organised for parents to have a better understanding of their children with autism spectrum disorder, and also to make sure they know what their kids are going through, in order to be there for them.

As part of Autism Month, Els for Autism SA visited the Lowveld on Friday April 12, to provide training for the Pro Gratia Learning Centre’s staff.

A special information session for parents was part of the programme to better understand their children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Inga Mdlatu explained to the parents that having a child with ASD could be tough, but that it is not the end of the world. She said parental support would be enough for them, and that caregivers should never make comparisons to other kids.

“It is important for parents to make sure they know their kids, to understand what they are going through and to be there for them all the time. We do understand that sometimes family members have their own beliefs about autism, but as a parent, you need to focus on making sure your kids have all the love they need,” she said.

Parents were provided with the necessary information on successfully working with children with ASD. They were also showed how play can be used to teach children with ASD and how they can become independent across certain areas of their lives.

During the event, parents shared their experiences of raising children with ASD to assist and equip others on their specific journeys. They were told God trusted them enough to care for these special children and that loving them was paramount.
