Dysfunctional Stinkhout streetlights to be fixed in Mbombela

The City of Mbombela said it would investigate the matter, determine the cause and repair the streetlights.

The City of Mbombela (CoM) is investigating why the streetlights in Stinkhout Crescent are not working, in order to repair them.

Some business owners in the area said the broken streetlights are aiding criminals taking opportunities when it is dark.

The CoM had not been aware of the problem until Lowvelder brought it to its attention, despite the businesses in the area claiming that the matter had been reported several times before.

“All we can say for now is that we will investigate the matter and check if it was reported to us before. But since it was brought to our attention by Lowvelder, we will make sure it gets fixed. I must also encourage community members to use the municipal platforms in place to report any service delivery matters where they reside,” Joseph Ngala, CoM’s spokesperson, said.

Ngala said residents can contact the call centre on 013 759 9111 or send an email to customercare@mbombela.gov.za. Alternatively, an SMS can be sent to 32552. A CoM official will attend to it accordingly.

This will also act as proof that the matter has been reported and that these platforms created by the CoM are indeed operational, Ngala said.

Meanwhile, the businesses in Stinkhout Crescent said they would embark on a campaign in the near future to revive the area by making sure it’s clean and the streetlights are working.

They said they would also ensure that the area is safe for their businesses and the people working in this area.
