Although most pet owners probably celebrate their pets every day, today they can be properly spoilt.

To celebrate the day, share a photo or video of your beloved pet. Post your cherished snapshots in the comment section on Facebook. Two 20kg bags of dog and cat food from Montana will be donated to the Nelspruit SPCA in the name of the winners. Two winners will be announced: the cutest, fluffiest, funniest, most lovable cat and dog.

The scientist Dr Sanchari Dutta found that pets have a positive impact on their owners’ mental health and overall well-being.

Lowvelder asked local veterinarians how pet owners can celebrate their pets. Dr Daniela Spath of Lowveld VET @ White River said a wonderful way to celebrate your pet is to provide them with a treat. She said a great treat she would recommend is dried beef livers, which can be given to cats and dogs. The treat is not only delicious, but also contains numerous health benefits, since it is full of vitamins such as B1, B12, iron, zinc and antioxidants.

The veterinarian team at The Vets @ 66 said pet owners can celebrate their pets by ensuring their vaccinations are up to date, as this will prevent any diseases and health problems. They also added that pet parents can treat their furry friends with good quality food.

Dr Kaylee Ferreira of Van Wijk Street Vet advises pet owners to take out insurance for their pets, as this will ensure that they have access to the best medical care. She said owners can prepare ice blocks with dog peanut butter and/or blueberries. Owners can wash their furry friends, but are advised to ensure that they are properly dried and their ears are cleaned.

The purpose of this day is also to raise awareness about pets awaiting homes in shelters.

There are many dogs, cats, puppies and kittens available for adoption at local shelters such as the Nelspruit SPCA, White River SPCA and Pro-Life Pet Rescue.

The playful and loving five-month-old Milo is awaiting adoption at Pro-Life Pet Rescue. He might have only three legs, but he is just as playful as any puppy. His one front leg was amputated as a result of a bad infection caused by a dog attack.

Pro-Life Pet Rescue is hopeful that the two eight-week-old puppies, Peanut and Butternut, will be adopted. Peanut is a female and is described as brave at heart and inquisitive, while her brother, Butternut, is cautious, but very friendly. These two will be medium to large when fully grown.

Loving Lina is a five-year-old German Shepherd mix who was abandoned by her previous owners when they moved. She is extremely intelligent and eager to please. Her party tricks include sitting and giving paw. This lady can be adopted from Pro-Life Pet Rescue.

The two winners will be announced on Lowvelder’s Facebook page on Monday April 15.
