Goods train hits truck outside Ohrigstad

A truck driver escaped unharmed when a Transnet goods train hit his truck at a level crossing earlier this morning, April 6.

A Mobile Freight Solutions truck driver had a lucky escape when his vehicle was hit by a train at a railway crossing in Maepa Village this morning, April 6, at about 07:30.

The driver escaped unscathed. The Transnet goods train operators were also uninjured.

The road was closed for more than four hours before the Van Wettens team removed the trailer from the busy road.

The driver said he hadn’t seen the train approaching. “I didn’t see it coming, I also didn’t hear any hooting. I only felt when it crashed into the trailer.”

He said he was driving the empty truck from Maputo to Malekaskraal outside Burgersfort.

A Transnet employee at the scene said: “We reiterate that motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should take utmost care when approaching level crossings.”

The road was cleared at about 11:00, when the truck was towed away by Van Wettens. The train continued with its trip at about 12:30.
