Hijacked truck’s stock offloaded in Hazyview graveyard

The Mpumalanga police said a truck driver en route to a chain store had all the stock loaded in the back stolen after he was hijacked and driven to a graveyard in Hazyview.

A truck driver was allegedly hijacked as he was driving on the R536 to a chain store in Hazyview when a group of men jumped out from the roadside and forced the driver to a halt on Wednesday February 28.

A provincial police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, said the group of suspects fired off a shot to get the truck driver to stop.

He said two suspects immediately jumped into the truck on either side of the driver, squeezing him in the middle. The suspects took charge and drove the truck towards a graveyard.

Nkosi said the suspects allegedly made several phone calls informing unknown people that the truck was heading towards the graveyard, and that they should arrange transport in order to carry the stock away.

He said the victim reported that upon their arrival at the graveyard, a few light delivery vehicles were waiting to be loaded up. It is alleged that the load was looted and loaded into the vehicles.

The driver alleges that it was at that time that some individual community members joined in and unlawfully grabbed some of what was in the truck. The driver was left in the graveyard with an empty truck.

Nkosi said a case of truck hijacking was opened and is currently under investigation.
