Secunda SAPS helps to deliver new life on roadside

In the early hours of Sunday, two constables of the Secunda SAPS went beyond their duty, assisting a woman in labour on the P138. With medical personnel still en route, the constables stepped in, delivering a healthy baby boy.

During the early hours of Sunday February 25, two members of the Secunda SAPS, Constable Prudence Diwe and Constable Jabulani Shongwe, responded to a call-out on the P138, where a couple were waiting next to their motorbike.

Upon their arrival, the husband informed the police that his wife was in labour, and as they were rushing to hospital, they had to stop on the roadside as the women’s condition was compromised. He said the medical personnel were on their way.

The constables contacted the medical services to send an ambulance to the scene, as the woman was in full labour. Diwe and Shongwe decided to assist in the delivery, and they successfully helped the woman deliver a healthy baby boy.

When the medical personnel arrived, the baby had already been born. Both the mother and the baby were taken to the hospital for further medical attention.
