Earlier this year, Mia embarked on her school journey as a Grade One learner at White River Primary School.
Kylie, Mia’s mother, describes her as their miracle baby, overcoming odds even before birth. At 13 weeks of pregnancy, doctors predicted a miscarriage, but Mia defied the odds.Kylie was hospitalised after contracting two infections during pregnancy, and Mia was born at only 34 weeks.

After spending two weeks in the NICU, Mia eventually went home. During a follow-up visit, a pediatric cardiologist identified a 7mm atrial septal defect in Mia’s heart, expressing the hope that it might close on its own.

Despite annual check-ups at Netcare Sunninghill Hospital, Mia’s heart hole did not close. Subsequent cardiac catherisation was unsuccessful, revealing multiple holes in her heart. On January 26, the medical team informed the family that open-heart surgery would be necessary as the holes were increasing in size.

The primary hole, initially 7mm, has grown to 17mm. Failure to address this could lead to further enlargement and potential damage to the heart.

To conduct Mia’s surgery, community assistance is crucial. The family needs financial help for travel expenses, toll gates, accommodation, uncovered medicines, and other unforeseen costs. After the operation, Mia will return to home for six to eight weeks, following strict guidelines to ensure her recovery.
