Man appears in Barberton Magistrate’s Court in connection with illegal explosives

A Zimbabwean citizen who was recently arrested for allegedly being in possession of explosives, appeared in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court today, January 5.

Zimbabwean citizen Thaimo Ndlovu (27) was remanded in custody by the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Monday February 5 for allegedly being in possession of explosives and being in contravention of the Immigration Act.

Ndlovu was arrested following a multidisciplinary tactical operation in Emjindini, Barberton, on Friday February 2.

The Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said the matter was postponed to February 9 for bail information and February 14 for the bail application.

Sekgotodi said in a previous statement that the team was led to the suspect’s residence in Barberton, and upon searching the premises, found the following items hidden in various places: nine electronic detonators, 14 shock tube assemblies, 16 blasting cartridges, six industrial drilling bits and 104m of detonating cord.

She said preliminary investigations indicated that the explosives were imported from Zimbabwe.

The suspect revealed during questioning that the explosives were primarily sold to illegal miners and other criminal elements.
