Courtroom drama unfolds as Michelle Jones’s murder case is postponed

In a sombre session in the Mpumalanga High Court, emotions ran high as family and friends rallied for justice in the case of Michelle Jones, the slain Nelspruit deputy sheriff. Amid legal twists and shouts of disbelief, the accused, Henry Dlamini, sought a postponement, leaving the community in suspense as they demand accountability.

On January 30, the Mpumalanga High Court in Mbombela witnessed an emotional gathering of family and friends supporting the late Nelspruit deputy sheriff, Michelle Jones.

The court was packed with these supporters wearing shirts featuring Jones’s image. The front read “Justice for Michelle Jones” and the back “No mercy for GBV”.

The accused, Henry Dlamini, appeared in court. His counsel requested a postponement, citing his client’s disagreement with his legal advise. Consequently, Dlamini’s representation withdrew. The judge granted the postponement to allow Dlamini to appoint a new legal representative. The trial will continue on Friday February 2.

Upon hearing the court’s decision to postpone the proceedings, emotions soared among the spectators, prompting some to shout out in disbelief. The judge warned about maintaining order, threatening to clear the courtroom if necessary.

Dlamini faces charges of murdering Jones, attempting to murder Julio Cohen, and possession of both a firearm and ammunition.

On October 20, 2022, Jones and Cohen were parked at a shopping centre in Mbombela, waiting for a third person, when they suddenly came under fire. Both Jones and Cohen sustained injuries, Jones succumbing to hers, but not before being able to provide vital assistance to the police in identifying the assailant. Cohen survived the attack.

Dlamini was arrested about five days later.

Jones’s family and friends are expected to attend the court proceedings again on Friday.
