PHOTOS: Grade One learners at Laerskool Numbi Primary eager to learn

The school made a special effort to accommodate the new learners and their parents. Taken to their classrooms, the children were able to choose a desk and take out their stationery for "big school."

The Grade One pupils at Numbi Primary School were dressed and kitted out for their new journey on Wednesday January 17.

However, not everyone was happy with the state of affairs and ran after their equally distraught parents. The braver ones told their parents to leave.

For other learners who returned to the school, their friends were happy to reconnect. The school also welcomed new staff members.

Bonjakele Majuba, the provincial MEC for education, said every effort had been made to ensure all learners of school-going age were admitted, but also acknowledged that some are on waiting lists. He promised that the department is undertaking interventions to address the situation.
