Lydenburg family loses home in devastating fire

A local family was left with only the clothes on their backs after a fire had broken out and engulfed their home. The cause has yet to be determined, but an investigation has been opened.

A family has been left destitute after their house on Viljoen Street in Lydenburg burnt down late on Thursday afternoon, January 11, and within minutes, the house was engulfed in flames.
No one was hurt during the incident, but the Wessels family lost their house and its contents.

Johan and Este Wessels and their two children, Cristian (10) and Carmen (6), were left with only the clothes on their backs after the fire swept through the family’s home.
As soon as news spread about the fire, a WhatsApp group, Este Hulpgroep, was formed and donations have been flooding in to aid the family.

The newspaper tried to make contact with the Wessels couple. The family, still obviously traumatised by the event, said they would be willing to talk to Steelburger/Lydenburg News on Monday January 15.
It is not clear how the fire started, but investigations are under way to determine the cause.
