Two races cancelled in Mpumalanga

During the week, two races were cancelled in Mpumalanga.

On January 8, the Nedbank Running Club Mpumalanga cancelled the 19th edition of the Van Wettens Nite Race, which had been scheduled for January 26.

The race is usually the first official one on the running calendar of the year. It has been taking place since 2004, with 2021 being the exception.

Monica Fourie, marketing manager at Van Wettens, said it was decided that the race should be held in Mbombela. “A race in the city would allow more runners to enter.” She said unfortunately, a venue in Mbombela could not be attained in time.

Mirandi Bekker, head of the Nedbank Running Club Mpumalanga, said the race will be held again in Mbombela in 2025.

On January 10, the Rotary Club of Barberton announced that the Barberton XCM MTB Challenge was cancelled.

This decision was the result of fewer entries than anticipated, said Chris Rippon, president of the Rotary Club Barberton.

Rita Erasmus, the marketing executive of the Mopani Group, advised that they will still assist the Rotary Club with other events during the course of the year to raise fund for the club.

Rippon advised that they would re-evaluate the possibility of holding the race again in 2025.
