Hazyview’s Pets in Distress needs your help this Christmas

Pets in Distress has its hands full as some animals flee their homes in terror during this time of the year, due to the frequent fireworks.

During this season of goodwill, it would be an ideal time to aid Pets in Distress (PID) in Hazyview by providing animals with a forever home, or making a donation of cat or dog food.

If it is not possible to take on a pet forever, providing a foster home would make a huge difference.

With regular fireworks this time of the year, many animals run away from home in fear and get lost, and the staff of PID have their hands full. In poorer communities, pets are left to fend for themselves by living off scraps from dustbins. Many of these dogs are always having more litters, adding to the heartbreaking situation of more destitute and uncared for animals.

“We already have dogs that don’t have homes as we found them on the streets. We are calling on people who could take care of them and give them a decent home. Our organisation believes that all animals need to be taken care of. People must realise that having a pet is a long-term undertaking, and if they do not have the time or money to keep one, they should refrain from doing so,” a spokesperson for the PID said.

They are also calling on pet owners to ensure that their animals are safe during the holidays, especially as fireworks will be used over the festive season. These animals need to be in a safe area.

“After New Year’s Eve, lots of dogs are lost as they try to hide from the fireworks; some end up being hit by cars on the streets, even proving dangerous to drivers who veer out to avoid hitting them. It would be wise to prepare a safe place for them before the big night. Those without a proper place can contact their nearest SPCA to keep pets safe on such nights,” the staff advised.

As the PID receives no outside funding, any help would be appreciated to ensure those dogs that are without homes at least have food during this time. Should you be interested in helping the organisation or joining one of its events, contact Juanita Tunnah on 076 905 2980 orSPCA on 068 085 2822.
