City of Mbombela storm water drains blocked

We Care 4 Nelspruit is stepping in to rectify the situation. They are currently working on a plan to unblock the drains, starting with the flooding hotspots.

Many of the storm water drainage systems across town are unable to cope with the rainwater, making the roads dangerous for motorists and pedestrians.
Roads dammed up with water in the city during the first heavy rains of the summer earlier this week.

Pr TJ Maré’s organisation, We Care 4 Nelspruit, is stepping in to rectify the situation. We Care 4 Nelspruit is currently working on a plan to unblock the drains.

Maré said they are starting with the flooding hotspots. “We cannot wait for the municipality to take action, because they might delay the process until the next heavy rainfall and we will not be able to control the situation. However, we are calling on them to join hands with us in unblocking the drainage systems.

“They can assist with manpower and machines to clear the blockages and do repairs where necessary. According to the weather services, we are expecting a lot of rain, and if the storm water drains are not cleaned soon, it’s a disaster in waiting,” he said.

He also called on affected community members to come on board.

Some residents claim that the drains are blocked due to poor municipal maintenance and littering on the streets. They are urging the CoM to act.

The CoM’s spokesperson, Joseph Ngala, was not available for comment at the time of going online.
