Man from Lydenburg convicted of stabbing and killing woman with a broken bottle

The woman who was killed last year lived in Extension 108 in Mashishing, just outside Lydenburg.

Themba Stompana Mahlangu (45) was convicted of the murder of his girlfriend and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Mpumalanga High Court on October 13.

He assaulted Tumelo Maria Mamogale (33) on October 4, 2022. Mahlangu then stabbed her in the neck with a broken bottle and she died shortly afterwards. The incident occurred in the early hours of October 4 last year at the Extension 108 in Mashishing.

“When neighbours heard Mamogale yelling, they rushed to her aid and found Mahlangu beating her in the street,” said Sergeant Cave Dilebo, spokesperson for the Lydenburg police.

They witnessed her being stabbed after which she succumbed to her injuries. Her neighbours heard her screaming and went to investigate. Mahlangu was arrested at the scene.

Antoinette Nkosi, the state advocate, called three neighbours to testify during the court case. “A post-mortem report confirmed that Mamogale died due to the force of a sharp object entering her neck,” said Nkosi.

“She first lost consciousness and then died. A police officer who attended the scene also testified about what he observed at the scene,” said Monica Nyuswa, spokesperson for the National Prosecution Authority in Mpumalanga.

Mahlangu pleaded not guilty during his trial. He claimed they were attacked by four unknown men.
