Mbombela’s Premier League receives a sports arena

The sports arena will be used by young people who used to play barefoot on sand fields in the rural areas.

As the Sinani Premier League (SPL) continues to instil a sense of identity and character in young people, its sponsors recently donated a sports arena outside White River.

This has brought hope and much-needed change for the young people who are members of the SPL. Brenda Rebro from Sinani said these young men and women used to play on rural sports fields, which had broken bottles and rocks strewn all over the place, making it unsafe for bare feet. With this new field they will be able to play soccer and netball without worry.

“A few years ago we felt the need to connect with our young men. We used to see them stop attending the initiatives they had at the life centres as they became teenagers. We wanted to make sure that did not continue to happen. We wanted to create a platform for them and a place where they can have a sense of belonging. We started with soccer. It has since evolved. We have added netball for our young ladies. It gives them a safe place. With this arena, we will be able to host events in a safe environment,” Rebro said.

The donation was made by people who love the work that is done by the organisation and want to see Sinani continuing to make the impact it does in local rural communities.
According to her, the arena is ready for the youth to play in, although there are some things they still need.
“When people come to watch the games, they will need some shelter and a net to help stop the balls from going into the road.”
