Celebrations galore at Curro Nelspruit

Not only were the Springboks' victory over the All Blacks reason to celebrate, but also the school's sporting achievements throughout the year.

Friday evening, August 25, was not only painted green and gold at Curro Nelspruit’s Springbok Fan Park, but also had a splash of white and blue to it.

Prior to the much-anticipated match-up between the Boks and the All Blacks, Curro handed over jerseys to celebrate their teams that displayed grit and resilience on the sport fields throughout the season.

Numerous of the school’s rugby, hockey and netball teams finished in the top 10 in their respective leagues.

The first netball team ended fifth, while the U16s were eighth.

The U9 and U10 rugby teams had a great season this year and managed to play their way into the top three in the Mpumalanga Medium Schools’ League. Curro’s first and second team rugby boys made history when both of these teams were crowned the champions of Mpumalanga, both in the Medium Schools’ League.

On the hockey front, the boys’ first hockey team managed to end their season as the second best in the Ehlanzeni district after a narrow loss to Hoërskool Nelspruit’s Eagles. With this, they claimed the fourth spot in the province.

The U16 girls’ hockey team have proven once again why they are a force to be reckoned with on the Astroturf. For the second year in a row, this team won the Mpumalanga Big Schools’ Hockey Championships. Last year, when the team was still U15, they competed in the Medium Schools’ League and their victory motivated them to compete with the big guns.

After these teams and their coaches were given the recognition they deserve, a few items were put up on auction – a signed 2022 Airlink Pumas’ Currie Cup rugby jersey, a cricket shirt signed and worn by the Protea bowler, Lundi Ngidi, as well as a Curro rugby jersey, signed by the Springbok group visited Mbombela last year.
