Truck hijacked in Mahushu and looted

The truck was transporting goods valued at R200 000 when four male suspects hijacked it as it slowed down for a speed hump.

A truck with R200 000’s worth of goods was hijacked on the R538 in Mahushu in the Masoyi area on Tuesday at about 10:00.

According to Masoyi police spokesperson Sergeant Nanikie Nonyane, the truck containing the driver and two other occupants was travelling from White River towards Hazyview, when four suspects approached it as it was slowing down for a speed hump.

“They pointed a firearm at the driver and his two occupants, instructing him to stop the truck. The driver eventually stopped the truck. Then two suspects got inside the truck; one suspect took over, driving the truck to the nearest bushes at Mahushu, and they offloaded everything and loaded it into their two white bakkies, a Drifter and a Toyota,” she said.

After the suspects had left, many community members looted what remained in the truck.

Later the same day, one suspect was arrested, and the two vehicles used to ferry the stolen goods were recovered, along with some of the stolen goods. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon, while the other three are still at large.

“I would like to warn community members to refrain from looting the leftovers of hijacked trucks, because they are contaminating the crime scene. If we find them, they will be charged with tampering with the crime scene,” Nonyane said.
