Two more suspects arrested in connection with Burgersfort police officer’s murder

The pair is expected to appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on July 20 to face charges relating to murder.

The Limpopo Hawks arrested two more suspects linked to the murder of a Burgersfort cop in Lebowakgomo on July 18.

The suspects, aged 25 and 36, are expected to appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court today, July 20.

Sergeant Terrence Kutullo Makgatho (38) was gunned down in Ga-Maijane Village in Lebowakgomo in the early hours of Saturday July 15. Makgatho, who was stationed at Burgersfort SAPS, but was off duty at the time, was allegedly shot and killed by unknown suspects who had been travelling in a bronze Volkswagen Golf 7 GTI.

The national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, immediately ordered the arrest of the suspects within 72 hours. A team of seasoned investigators, other police units and private entities led by Major General Gopz Govender of the DPCI, was assembled.

The investigation led the team to Braamfontein in Johannesburg, where a suspicious vehicle with three occupants was spotted.

“The team tactically stopped the vehicle and subsequently arrested the driver, Moses Mphahlele (33), as one of the suspects in the murder of Sergeant Makgatho. The accused appeared in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on July 17 and was remanded in custody until July 26 for a formal bail application,” said the Limpopo Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke.

He said investigations into the case continue.
