Tennis Masters to invade Mbombela

Seasoned tennis players will take centre court at this tournament to be held from May 15 to 19.

Top-tier tennis is coming to Mbombela as the city hosts this year’s Growthpoint Masters Interprovincial Tournament from May 15 to 19 at Nelspruit Tennis Club, Hoërskool Nelspruit and Panorama Tennis Club.

The Growthpoint Masters Interprovincial Tournament features top players between the ages of 55 and 75 from seven provinces: Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, North West and Mpumalanga.

“We are excited to host this prestigious event in Mbombela. A tournament of this magnitude brings with it big economic spin-offs for the city. The local tennis community is ready to roll out the welcome mat to the hundreds of players and their families who will call Mbombela home for five days. We are grateful to our sponsors, Jock Pub & Grill, Emnotweni, Buscor, Crossing SPAR, CK Embroideries, Thormahlen Safaris, Westvaal Numbi Ford, 18 Carat Jewellers and Mpumalanga Sound – for heeding to our call to make the event memorable,” says the tournament co-ordinator, Johanna Brink.

She said the masters circuit is still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, which explains the absence of Northern Cape and Free State.

The hosts have assembled strong players, who have experience in playing at this level. As always, the likes of Gauteng and Western Cape are in the mix for podium finishes.

Team Mpumalanga is stacked up as follows: (55A) Anso Thormahlen (c), Philly le Roux, Pieter Boshoff, Jacob van Zyl, Nettie Beetge and Susan Maritz.
