R40 sinkhole causes damage to several vehicles near Drum Rock Hill

A newly formed sinkhole in the middle lane of the R40 near Drum Rock Hill has resulted in damage to the tyres and rims of several vehicles. Motorists are urged to travel with caution.

Several vehicles sustained damage to tyres and rims earlier this evening when they were driven through a sinkhole on the R40 near Drum Rock Hill on April 25.

The sinkhole is in the middle lane, on the R40 from Mbombela towards White River.

The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport’s spokesperson, Bongani Dlamini, said a contractor had been conducting resealing work on a stretch of the R40, and the sinkhole had formed after the contractor had left the site.

He said the department had dispatched a team to close the lane and install temporary warning signs leading up to and around the sinkhole.

Motorists have been urged to travel with caution until the sinkhole has been repaired.
