Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court postpones traffic officer murder case

The traffic officer was allegedly killed after he was found with another man's wife at Kwanyoni Lodge outside Mbombela.

The 38-year-old Abednigo Mbuyane, a City of Mbombela by-law enforcement officer, appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday April 17. The case was postponed to Friday April 22 for a formal bail application.

Mbuyane handed himself in at the Nelspruit Police Station on Sunday April 16 after he was sought in connection with a murder of Thomsanga Nkosi (34) on Saturday April 15 at Kwanyoni Lodge.

The Hawks’ provincial spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said that on Saturday April 15, Mbuyane and a female friend had booked in at the lodge.

“While they were in the chalet, the woman’s husband emerged and kicked down the door.

“It is further alleged that the traffic official ran out of the chalet and the husband followed him and fired shots. The victim was shot twice and succumbed to his wounds. The suspect fled the scene, but later handed himself in at Nelspruit Police Station,” said Sekgotodi.

His official firearm was seized and the investigation continues.

Jacques Viljoen, Kwanyoni’s owner, said, “We are fully co-operating with the authorities. Our main priority at this time is to ensure the safety and well-being of our guests and staff, as we always do. We would like to reiterate that this was an isolated incident which has shocked us to the core. Due to the circumstances surrounding it, we could unfortunately do nothing to avoid it.

“We would like to assure our guests that safety has always been, and will forever be, our top priority. As this is an ongoing investigation we are unable to comment further on the details of the situation.”
