Laerskool Laeveld proud of compassionate learners

Laerskool Laeveld's principal said that society can learn a lot from a wholesome and heartwarming moment between two of the school learners that was captured on video earlier this month.

Laerskool Laeveld has responded with pride to a wholesome moment between two learners that was recently captured on video by local Harshil Mitha of TwoRedPens Marketing Agency.

The footage showed a Grade Seven boy helping a Grade Six learner through some class oral jitters on Wednesday March 8.

Laerskool Laeveld principal Niël Jacobs said the staff felt proud of both boys on the video.

“The learners were overwhelmed with feelings of joy and unity when they first saw the video,” said Jacobs.

“During school orals, two Grade Seven prefects (one boy and one girl) are tasked with being programme directors. Both these prefects have actually assisted participants when their nerves got the better of them in he past by standing with them and just showing them that they are not alone.

“On the day of the video in question however, the right person was at the right place at the perfect time. We are very grateful that Harshil was able to catch this moment on video,” he said.

“Being able to stand in front of parents, friends and judges ready to give your speech as a Grade Six learner, takes lots of guts,” he said.

“A Grade Seven learner being able to see that a fellow learner needed encouragement and realising what this Grade Six boy must be feeling and simply standing up to put a hand on his shoulder as sign of support, shows emotional intelligence and leadership and speaks to our heart’s centre as a caring school.”

He said the school always encourages its learners to support one another, especially through tough times. Every learner has a unique ability and by supporting each’s ability makes them stronger, more confident and allows them to grow into well-balanced individuals who can become adults that add value to our society.”

Jacobs added that being able to be cognisant of our fellow man and what they are going through, not judging them but supporting them in their efforts, is exactly what we as South Africans need more of.

“Forgetting about the rush and having the ability to stop and support someone along the way is what we have witnessed in this heart-warming video. May we never forget that as a society there is often much more for us to learn from our children than from its seasoned members and leaders,” he said.
