Help Hazyview’s Pets in Distress help feral cats

If you would like to contribute towards the sterilisation of feral cats in Hazyview, Pets In Distress needs you. The organisation has two upcoming events to raise funds for its sterilisation campaign.

Pets in Distress (PID) requested the townspeople of Hazyview and the rest of the Lowveld’s assistance.

It is running a campaign to get as many feral cats as possible sterilised. To enable it to do so, the organisation is hosting two exciting events, one in April and one in May, to raise the necessary funds.

First up is a ladies’ tea at Plumbago Guest House on April 15. The cost of a table, which seats 10 people, is R2 000.

Vivien Mackay, the liaison officer for PID, said it needs to get companies and shopping centres involved to make this event successful.

“Ferals are good for the environment, but they are producing too many kittens and we as a town cannot save them all. In the last week, we have had foster parents rearing seven kittens. Members of the community are also assisting.”

The next event, an evening of fun music raffles, will be held on May 26. There will be 12 tables of 10 people at R250 per person.

Mackay said PID was recently donated five catch-and-release cages for feral cats.

“Once sterilised, cats are returned to where they came from and can continue to prevent rats taking over. At present it costs R750 to do sterilisations through Greater Kruger Alley Cat Initiative. We have also approached Hazyview Clinic, the state vet and the SPCA to assist us to bring costs down by buying the medication needed through the state vet and the SPCA, so it is more affordable.”

They also rent the cages out at R50 per day.

“This is a very necessary service that we need to do, and we encourage people to support us in this endeavour.”
