The Mpumalanga Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said the suspects will be taken to the Nelspruit District Court today for their first appearance.

She said between November and December 2020, the suspects allegedly colluded with certain pharmacies to defraud a medical scheme. This was allegedly done by claiming for services that had not been rendered by these pharmacies.

This is a developing story. Lowvelder will update its readers as soon as more information becomes available.

* Lowvelder previously reported that the accused are employees of the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS), as reported by the Mpumalanga Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi.

Dr Phumelela Dhlomo, chief marketing officer of GEMS, has since released a statement in which GEMS confirmed that the suspects are not employed by it. “The investigation and those charged are not subjects of GEMS, nor any agents thereof,” Dhlomo said.
