Summerhill Prep’s brand new astro-court is open for play

To celebrate it's 25th anniversary, Summerhill Prep opened the first Astro-turf court of its kind in Hazyview.

To celebrate turning a quarter of a century, Summerhill Prep in Hazyview officially opened ‘The Quart’, the first multi-sport astro-court of its kind in the Hazyview area.

On October 21, pupils and staff celebrated the school’s quarter of a century anniversary and decided to give the new multi-purpose astro-turf court its quirky name ‘The Quart.

The Astro-turf surface can accommodate numerous sporting disciplines including tennis, netball, action cricket, 5-a-side football and mini-hockey.

Head of Summerhill Prep, Cheryl Calmeyer, said, “We are a Non-profit Organisation so any money put in by the parents goes straight back into the school. We gradually and carefully build up a reserve until we have enough money to tackle a big project like this one.”

At the opening ceremony, Calmeyer reminded the school of its mission ‘to provide students with a limitless horison and the means to open doors to any field of achievement.’

This was followed by the school’s vision ‘to raise the ability, initiative and cultural level in the education process, so that the students may thrive and be part of raising the survival level of society’.

After singing the school song, everybody danced to and sang ‘Jabulani Africa’ as the ribbon was cut and the sign unveiled.

Twenty-five years ago, a small group of parents officially opened Summerhill Prep School with 7 children and a garage as a classroom.

Today, it boasts a beautiful campus nestled in riverine forest, and accommodates 128 children from grade 000 to 7.

Calmeyer said, “What a wonderful 25th birthday present this is to ourselves. This is the first court of its kind in the area.

The opening celebrations ended with a ‘bring ‘n braai’ with pap, sheba and salads provided.
