Graves desecrated at Barberton Cemetery

One person was questioned but no one has been arrested.

Police in Barberton are investigating a case of desecration of graves.

Umjindi Community Patrols as well as Hi-Tech Barberton said they noticed someone digging up graves and damaging tombstones at Barberton Cemetery.

James Brickhill from Umjindi Community Patrols said they went to the graveyard and parked their vehicles outside. They could see lights inside the cemetery.

According to Brickhill, two men busy desecrating a grave. One managed to get away while the other did not.

“He showed us all the graves he had started digging up and damaged. Under two we found white powder, coins, grave numbers, photos that was taken off tombstones, angels made of plaster and more.

Colonel Donald Mdhluli, provincial police spokesperson, said one person was questioned about the matter but no one has been taken into custody.

“No one has been arrested or charged yet, however, the police are investigating the matter. Members of the public are urged to assist with information on the whereabouts of the suspects, and can call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111. Alternatively members of the public can send information via My SAPS app. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.”
