Leopard attacks employee in Sabi Sand

An employee that was attacked by a leopard in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve was airlifted to hospital. 

Sabi Sand Nature Reserve confirmed that a leopard attack took place on August 21. An employee was seriously injured.

“The leopard, an old male in poor condition, attacked the employee who was on the veranda of her residence. She sustained multiple injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital,” the reserve said.

It further stated that this was unusual behaviour for a leopard, and it is assumed that his age and poor condition led to this “desperate attack”.

The reserve confirmed that the leopard had since been euthanised in accordance with protocols for incidents of this nature, with the necessary approval from the provincial authority, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency.

A full investigation of the incident is underway.
