Update: No arrests yet after shop owner is gunned down

The owner of Koenic Dunlop Zone Nelspruit was killed during a business robbery on Friday.

Mbombela police are investigating a murder and business robbery case with regard to an incident that occurred at Koenic Dunlop Zone Nelspruit on Old Pretoria Road on August 5.

According to the police, it was reported that the shop owner, Riaan van der Sandt, had been with his staff as they were about to close the shop, when a group of around nine suspects entered the building.

“The suspects threatened the shop owner and his employees with firearms. They assaulted one of the staff, demanded that he show them where the safe is and took an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects then shot the shop owner during the process of the robbery and he died on the scene.”

Hi-Tech’s Michiel van de Venter was on the scene first after the security company had been notified of the incident.

Van de Venter said the paramedics arrived shortly after he did and certified Van der Sandt dead on the scene.
