Nine-year-old drowns in Skukuza pool

The child had been visiting the Kruger with his family when the incident occurred on Saturday July 16.

The SANParks management conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the family of a nine-year-old who had drowned while visiting the Kruger National Park (KNP).

The incident took place at the Skukuza day visitors’ area late in the afternoon on Saturday July 16.

According to a statement released by SANParks, the security officer on duty reported he had found the deceased floating in the pool while he was doing his rounds. “He jumped into the pool, pulled him out and performed CPR while waiting for medical assistance. Unfortunately, the child was pronounced dead by the Skukuza residential doctor who attended to the incident,” the statement read.

“Reports suggest that the deceased had been visiting the KNP with his family at the time of the incident.

“The SAPS were notified and their forensics team removed the body after collecting the evidence they needed from the scene. An inquest docket has been opened by the police and the results of the investigation will be communicated to the next of kin in due course.”

The names of the family members and the deceased are being withheld for their privacy.
