Provincial commissioner concerned about gender-based violence incidents

This concern stems from an incident in which two women were killed in KaNyamazane on Sunday.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lt Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has noted with concern the increasing number of gender-based violence incidents, which include murder, kidnapping and rape of women and children.

The concern of the general comes in the midst of an incident in which two female siblings, aged 42 and 43 (one a police sergeant), were brutally gunned down, allegedly by a male partner of one of the siblings. The incident occurred on May 15 in KaNyamazane.

According to the information at the police’s disposal, an argument between the suspect and his female companion broke out when the woman’s sister, as well as two other women, intervened. The man left, only to return later with a firearm.

He allegedly shot his partner as she attempted to flee in a blue BMW that was earlier driven by the suspect. The suspect went inside the house and shot the police sergeant before he fled the scene. The other two women escaped without being harmed.

The two sisters were certified dead on arrival at a nearby clinic. The police in KaNyamazane opened a case of two counts of murder. A manhunt has been launched for the suspect.

The sisters were identified as Pretty Mazibuko (42) who was stationed at Ngodwana Police Station and Marcia Mazibuko (43).

Authorities urged a man named Rassie Nkuna to immediately contact the police as they believe he can assist the investigation team in their probe.
