215 babies born on New Year’s Day

Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality's mayor Eddie Maila showered New Year's babies with presents at both Dilokong and Mecklenburg hospitals.

Maila and his entourage visited them on New Year’s Day. The mayor said he appreciated the health experts’ tireless effort and dedication in public hospitals across the municipality.

“On New Year’s Eve when most of us celebrated and welcomed 2022, they were hard at work in the maternity wards. We appreciate the work done by our doctors, nurses and support staff in making sure the health of our society is safeguarded during this difficult period of Covid-19,” Maila said as he handed out the gifts.
The presents included diapers, clothes, toys and many gifts for infants.

In total, Limpopo welcomed 215 babies on New Year’s Day. According to information provided by the Department of Health, 107 boys and 108 girls were successfully delivered in public hospitals across the province. Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) had 17 boys and 28 girls. SDM also saw the only set of twins. The infants weighed two kilograms and were born at Mecklenburg Hospital at 03:25.

Meanwhile, 253 babies were born in the province on Christmas Day. Of these, 124 are boys and 129 are girls. The province delivered 23 fewer babies than on Christmas Day in 2020. A total of 50 babies (17 boys and 33 girls) were delivered in SDM.
