Young man soldiers on despite losing mobility in accident

The guarantees life gives us daily can be taken for granted and in one single unforeseen moment, all you have can be swept away immediately. Just ask Kallie (Kalla) Greef (20). He was involved in a serious car accident earlier this year and was left paralysed from the neck down.

Greef had been asleep in the back of a friend’s car as they were driving back home to Hazyview, when the vehicle rolled down a hill for about 60 metres. When he awoke, he had no feeling whatsoever from his neck down. After being treated in hospital, he started his journey to rehabilitation.

Greef is currently doing his acute inpatient rehabilitation at M-Care in Mbombela. He is also in the process of undergoing stem cell treatment, which his loved ones hope will help him to regain full movement in his arms and hands, as well as to regain control over his bladder and bowel movements.

His family and friends have not rested a single day in helping Greef to recover as he still sees the value of life. Fundraising events have been organised to assist covering all the necessary costs that the medical insurance does not cover for treatment and rehabilitation.

Kallie Greef and his father, Ferdi, in hospital.

Kruger Park Lodge, Hazyview Rugby Club and family members arranged a First Step for Kallie Golf Day on November 27, which helped the Greef family significantly. The next golf day will be on January 28, which anyone can enter to support Greef on his journey to recovery.

“With everything that happened to my son, his new life and body, his attitude towards everything makes me proud to be his father. He is always positive despite what happened to him. The way in which he handles his day-to-day life after the tragedy makes him the strongest person I have ever known,” said his father, Ferdi Greef.

Kallie refused to grieve the loss of his mobility as he listed the things he wanted to achieve in his new life. He is faced with new challenges and obstacles that lie ahead, but his will to fight and overcome everything mentally is strong.
