Heavy vehicle hijacked and goods gone

A heavy vehicle carrying an undisclosed amount of food items and frozen meat was hijacked on the Badfontein Road on Thursday December 2 at about 08:00.

The 37-year-old driver of White River Cold Storage was on his way to do a delivery in Lydenburg.

Capt Kaizer Moela, the Lydenburg SAPS spokesperson, said the driver was forced to wait for oncoming traffic to avoid driving through potholes. While the victim was still waiting on the shoulder of the Badfontein Road for the traffic to pass, a white Toyota Yaris stopped in front of him and blocked the road.

He alleged that two armed men jumped out of the Toyota Yaris and forced him into its boot.

“According to the driver, one of the suspects drove the Toyota Yaris towards Lydenburg and the other the heavy vehicle. They instructed the driver to climb out of the boot on the Burgersfort Road (R37).

He is not sure what happened while he was in the boot. He pulled down a motorist and asked to be taken to the Lydenburg Police Station,” said Moela. Security companies and the Lydenburg SAPS put out an alert for the truck, and it was found later that afternoon in Buhrmann Street.

The two suspects left it idling next to the road and fled the scene when the police and security companies showed up. “The heavy vehicle was handed over to its driver after arrangements were made with the SAPS Vehicle Identification Unit.

The content of the delivery must have been removed by the alleged hijackers in the meantime and transported in another vehicle. The driver said it was full of frozen meat and other food products,” said Moela.

A case hijacking was opened. Any information that might lead to the arrest of the suspects, may be communicated to Lt Col Owen Dibakoane on 082 303 9799.
