Court relaxes bail conditions of two accused

Schalk Abraham "AB" Steyn (48) and Dawie Groenewald (52) made a brief appearance in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on December 10, where the matter was postponed until February 23, 2022.

Steyn and Groenewald were arrested for the alleged possession of 19 rhino horns on July 20, and after appearing in court on July 23 for the first time, they were released on bail of R50 000 each.

Steyn is from Mbombela and Groenewald is a Limpopo game farmer. Both are employed and conduct business in the game industry. According to Steyn’s advocate, JJ Venter, he said the morning’s proceedings resulted in Groenewald and Steyn’s bail conditions being relaxed.

He said the duo would no longer have to sign in at a police station weekly as they are both professional hunters and their jobs require them to be in the bush for sometimes a week at a time.

Another matter arising during the latest appearance was a request from both Steyn and Groenewald’s council that the state provided the list of witnesses in the case in the next 30 days.
