Hazyview Karate Dojo still stands strong

Throughout this year, the sport in Hazyview had to be put on hold with the Covid restrictions, but as the lockdown levels were lifted level by level, the New World Shotokan Karate Hazyview Dojo worked hard to let its students reach their full potential.

The dojo had been open for more than a decade, including this year as it followed strict protocols of the Covid regulations, training its students to develop the necessary skills and life lessons. Currently it has 14 students from Hazyview and 15 from Skukuza. They had the opportunity to test their skill at a karate competition in Mbombela on October 16.

Sensei Sandra Jansen van Vuuren teaches her students karate on a farm at De Rust next to Numbi Park. A head sensei must have a third dan to run the dojo and Hugo Lusse is achieving his third dan in December. The ranking system is used by many martial art organisations to indicate the level of a person’s ability within a given system.

Many black and brown belts have been achieved at the dojo through hard training and strict discipline. The dojo has two black belt students this year.

“We provide the art of karate as a no-contact sport to them, teaching them the importance of discipline and respect. The students develop talents in each of their levels, and we are always excited to see the improvement right before our eyes,” said Jansen van Vuuren.

Not only is the form of martial art being taught to the students, but also patience, self-discipline, endurance and emotional intelligence. At the end of November a rating graduation from white to brown belt will take place for some, while in the first week of December others will graduate to black belt.

Each type of martial art has its own belt-rating system. There are six belt colours in karate: white, orange, blue, yellow, green, brown and black. All belts besides the white ones, the rank you start with, could have dashes to indicate further progress. There is also a red belt, which is a ninth-grade black belt achievement.
