Epic croc fight draws attention of visitors to Kruger

A group of visitors were treated to a showdown between two crocodiles in the Kruger National Park.

Visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) were recently treated to a once-in-a-lifetime sighting when a large crocodile wrestled and attacked a smaller crocodile for hours on end.

Anne-Marie Scheepers, a professional photographer of Krugersdorp, told Lowvelder she was visiting the park with a group of friends on September 30 when they came across the scene playing out.

“We were staying in Skukuza and drove to Lower Sabie to have breakfast when we saw what was happening at Sunset Dam. This was about 11:15,” Scheepers said.

According to her, a large crocodile, about 3.5 to four metres long, was constantly biting a smaller crocodile, keeping it in its mouth the whole time. “Later, about nine other crocodiles gathered around to see what was going on, but they did not dare to interfere.”

She said the parking area at the dam was packed with visitors who were looking at the spectacle that was playing out in front of them.

“I have been visiting the KNP for the past 20 years and I have never witnessed something like this before. It was really amazing. I still get goosebumps when I think about it,” said Scheepers.

She said a private game ranger had told her the fight had first begun at 07:30 that morning, and it had lasted to well after 13:00 when the group had left.

“When we left, the smaller crocodile was still alive. It never gave up.”
