Two people killed in accident on R40

The bakkie was found on its roof on the side of the road.

Two men were killed and two others injured on Tuesday September 21, when their bakkie rolled off the R40 near Hazyview.

According to Russel Meiring, spokesperson for ER24, the bakkie was found on its roof on the side of the road. Four men were lying around the vehicle.

“Medics assessed the men and found that two had already succumbed to their numerous injuries. Nothing could be done for them, and they were declared dead. Another man was in a critical condition, while a fourth escaped with minor injuries,” said Meiring in a statement.

Paramedics treated the men and provided the critically injured man with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the critically injured man was airlifted by the provincial medical helicopter to a nearby hospital. The other man was transported by ambulance.

Meiring said local authorities were on the scene and will conduct further investigations.

Juanita Kruger, a resident of White River, told Lowvelder that she was on her way to Hazyview and passed the accident scene just after 11:20.

“The road was extremely misty and I switched on the hazard lights of my vehicle. It was only when I drove passed the accident scene when I could see the vehicle on its roof.”

On her way back to White River, at about 12:00, the road was closed in order for the helicopter to land on the road.

“Paramedics worked for more than an hour to stabilise the patient and load him onto the helicopter. The road was only reopened at 14:07.”
