Elderly button up for Heritage Day

What started out as a normal buttons craft project at Mataffin Macadamia Lifestyle and Assisted Living Village turned into a crafty symbol of our heritage as September 24 approaches.

As part of the weekly activity programme, Lily Care staff had some of the residents of Mataffin Macadamia Lifestyle and Assisted Living Village create a South African flag.

Front: Pop van Zyl, Paddy Swart, (back) Koekoe Schnepel, Dave McCarthy, Liz Barnes, Collette Wright and Margaret Shepherd.

The flag was made out of buttons that were collected and then glued onto the pattern drawn beforehand.

The activity co-coordinator, Liz Barnes, said all in all it took them about three months to finish the project and they are extremely proud of how it turned out.

The director of Lily Care, Collette Wright, said the crafts group keeps the mind busy and the people talking and even singing.

The making of the flag specifically involved fine-motor skills, Wright mentioned. She said these skills do get a bit more difficult with old age, and these activities help.

They have posted images on their Facebook page, but are considering an unveiling on Heritage Day as well.

For Wright, it also represents understanding and the integration of South Africa.

“The people we care for come from the old days, and our staff are very patient with them. And we see that relationship building.”

Both Wright and Barnes said they wanted to give a big thank you to Frame Gallery who sponsored the framing of
the flag.
