Five people die due to accident on N4 toll road near Mbombela

Four people were killed when a BMW sedan crashed into a tree on the N4 toll road near Elandsfontein at 19:30 yesterday.

According to Moeti Mmusi, the spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liasion, the driver of the sedan seemingly lost control and the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a tree.

“Three males and one female, including the driver, died at the scene.”

“One critically injured passenger was rushed to a nearby hospital in Mbombela. He later died. The Jaws of Life had to be used to remove the bodies from the wreckage, ” he explained.

He said the vehicle was driving towards Mbombela at the time.

“While the crash is still under investigation, it is suspected that the vehicle may have been moving at a speed not conducive for the prevailing conditions on the road.”

The MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has urged motorists to use roads cautiously.

“We need more responsible driving on the roads because the trend of deadly crashes on weekends, especially at night, is worrying. We want motorists to hear our messages and drive with greater caution at all times.”

He also sent his condolences to the bereaved families and wished those who were injured a speedy recovery.
