PCA hands out blankets to grateful needy ahead of another cold front

Over 500 blankets were handed out in total last week.

With another cold front hitting the Lowveld, Pediatric Care Africa (PCA) handed out blankets to those who need them the most.

This was done in collaboration with Giving Back 2 our Community (GB2C) in Mbombela and Boikanyo the Dion Herson Foundation, based in Soweto.

The PCA secretary, Surika van der Merwe, said the organisation was able to help around 90 small children with baby blankets, donated by Marilyn Bassin of the Soweto-based organisation, and donated 450 blankets to older children and their parents, supplied by GB2C.

Van der Merwe said they collected the blankets from Valencia last Wednesday, and made their first stop at the Magalela informal settlement to hand out blankets to the families.

“After Magalela we went on to Brondal to find around six informal homes had burned down, leaving the occupants with nothing,” said Van der Merwe.

“There was a man who lost his home and everything he owned in a fire. He cried when we gave him and his family blankets. We will ensure all the people who lost their houses in the fire receive enough food,” she said.

Van der Merwe said they then went to a place called The Farm, on which around nine families live, and handed out the rest of the blankets to the people there.

“Thanks to GB2C we managed to hand out 450 high-quality, brand-new blankets to families in our community today. “The oldest blanket recipient was 85 and the youngest was just three days old,” said Van der Merwe.
