Victim of hit-and-run on the road to recovery

Wihan de Jager (25) suffered several fractures in an accident, and had to have his leg amputated afterwards.

He has since been transferred from Rob Ferreira Hospital to Kiaat Hospital, and the family is feeling positive even if the road to recovery will be difficult.

A Hyundai H100 one-ton light commercial vehicle crashed into his scooter on June 25 and drove away, leaving him critically injured and helpless on the R40 towards Mbombela.

He was transported to Rob Ferreira Hospital and has undergone three surgeries in the meantime, one in which his leg had to be amputated due to it being torn apart when he had crashed into a sharp and dangerous edge of a side barrier.

Since De Jager has no medical aid, Rob Ferreira Hospital was the family’s only option, but they have since gathered the funds to make it possible for him to be transferred to Kiaat Hospital.

The family still wishes to thank the personnel at Rob Ferreira for their excellent service. “We have nothing to complain about; we just decided to move him to Kiaat to speed up the process,” said Willa de Jager, Wihan’s mother.

“We are trying to stay positive, especially Wihan. It has been a very traumatic experience,” said Johan de Jager, his father.

The family requested the community for donations to contribute to medical costs. “We have received some donations. The people of the Lowveld are really opening their hearts to help,” said Johan.
