Penryn to build access road for a ‘long walk to freedom’

Just over 30 years ago, in 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison. In 1994, his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, was published.

During this momentous time, Penryn College was born; it celebrates its 30th birthday this year.

The concept of a long walk is derived from the idea of life as a journey. Over the past 30 years, the development of Penryn as an established educational institution, has been a journey of incredible commitment and generosity for many people.

In the early years of the school, after Roger Cameron’s appointment as the first headmaster of Penryn in 1992, it ran a buy-a-brick campaign to build the chapel. Now, to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s iconic long walk to freedom and Penryn’s journey to maturity, the school asks the community to donate the cost of 67 bricks (R200) to complete building the school’s access road.

It will be called the “One and All” in acknowledgement of the links to the founding school, St Stithians, and its motto. The campaign will be called “Let’s Build a Road” and will be extended to the wider Penryn community, Ridgehill Estate and Panorama Village.
