UPDATE: Mpumalanga roads quiet despite protest threats

Motorists were warned on Sunday to avoid the N4 and R40 due to threats of protest action.

The provincial police spokesperson, Brig Leonard Hlathi, said Mpumalanga had not been affected by the protests today, and that the roads are clear.

The Nelspruit CPF chairperson, John Meintjes, also said there had been no news of protests in the Lowveld.

He said said there has been some protest action between Tekwane South and KaNyamazane, but this was due to electricity issues the community is having.

Police have confirmed they will be on high alert following threats of road closures and potential attacks on trucks and transport companies throughout the province tomorrow. National police spokesperson, Colonel Brenda Muridili, said police will be keeping a close eye on the roads.

Nelspruit CPF chairperson, John Meintjes, said road closures were anticipated from 03:00 on Monday morning and has advised that transport companies are at serious risk.

Meintjes said vehicles, particularly trucks, should stay clear of the following roads:

* The N4 – Machado Toll Plaza to Nkomazi Toll Plaza
* The R40 from Hazyview to Hoedspruit.

Meintjes has urged people living in or around these areas to not make use of these routes and to rather stay home or use alternative roads.
