No suspects in attempted CIT heist

No arrests have been made after the attempted cash-in-transit heist that occurred on the R40 on the morning of May 5.

At around 07:00 an armoured G4S vehicle, accompanied by a bakkie, was travelling from Mbombela to Barberton when assailants in two cars started shooting at both cars with automatic weapons. The guards in the bakkie returned fire.

One of the cars then pulled in front of the armoured vehicle, blocking its path. The assailants, wearing balaclavas then got out and continued firing at the two G4S vehicles. Residents from surrounding farms reported that they heard the gunshots.

The security guards managed to subdue the attackers and rammed into one of their vehicles. This forced the assailants to hijack three other cars to make their getaway.

The heist was unsuccessful as no money was stolen. All three vehicles were found by police soon after in three different locations. Police found that the two cars used in the heist, which had been abandoned at the scene, were also stolen.

Despite the manhunt launched, Captain Lucy Sekgtodi from the Hawks confirmed that they had no suspects yet.

G4S confirmed that the driver and another security guard had sustained minor injuries during the incident. Managing director for G4S South Africa, Renso Smit, said that they were investigating the attack and are working closely with the SAPS.

It is believed that the suspects were also wounded during the shootout.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
